What is Mental Health Communication ?

Mental health communication is essential in creating understanding, reducing stigma, and supporting individuals affected by eating disorders. The way we talk about mental health can either encourage openness and healing or reinforce silence and misunderstanding. By using respectful, informed, and compassionate communication, we can help build a more supportive environment for those who may be struggling.

What to say vs What to avoid

Supportive language

Supportive language
"I'm here for you, no matter what."
"I noticed you seem stressed lately — do you want to talk?"
"You don't have to explain yourself to me."
"Is there anything I can do to help you feel supported?"
"I care about you, not what you eat."

Harmful language to avoid

  • Commenting on body size (positive or negative)

  • "You should eat more / less"

  • "I wish I had your willpower"

  • Using food as moral language ("clean eating," "guilty pleasure")

  • "You don't look like you have an eating disorder"

Daily Observations

Have you tried just... not thinking about food so much?"
My roommate commented that he "ate so bad" this week and was going to "detox" before the weekend.
"I can't eat carbs right now, I'm cutting."
"You look so good, you've lost weight!"  said without knowing what someone is going through.

Who is our Target Audience ?

Our audience for Breaking the Silence: Eating Disorders & Mental Health is primarily on teenagers and young adults, especially those who may be struggling with body image, concerns, disordered eating, the pressures of social media and lifestyle culture. This group is often highly influenced by unrealistic standards and my experience mental health challenges in silence. And this website also supports friends, family members and peers who want to better understand eating disorders and learn how to communicate in a supportive and informed way. By focusing on both individuals at risk and those around then the platform promotes awareness, reduces stigma and encourages people to open up about their own mental health.
